What does a 5 micron pre-filter do?
The micron rating describes the approximate particle size the cartridge is designed to capture. A 5 micron sediment cartridge helps intercept visible and suspended material before it enters later filters. It does not remove dissolved salts by itself and should not be sold as a complete answer to every water-quality concern.
By reducing sediment load, the cartridge can help protect finer filters and the RO membrane. If sediment is unusually heavy, the site may need additional pre-treatment rather than very frequent replacement of a small cartridge.
How often should it be checked?
There is no universal interval for every home. Check more frequently when the water changes after rain, the well produces sand, plumbing work has disturbed deposits, flow reduces, or the cartridge darkens quickly. Source-water quality and household use can make one installation very different from another.
Do not wait for complete blockage. Reduced flow can affect the rest of the system. Keep the installation date and inspection dates so the pattern at your home becomes clear.
Can a sediment cartridge be washed?
Washability depends on the exact cartridge construction and the manufacturer’s instructions. Rinsing a disposable depth cartridge may improve its appearance without restoring its original filtration performance. Do not assume that every white PP cartridge is reusable. Confirm the exact model before cleaning or reinstalling it.
Signs that the cartridge needs attention
- Noticeably lower water flow into the treatment system
- Heavy discolouration or visible sediment loading
- Particles passing beyond the first housing
- A damaged, distorted, poorly fitting, or leaking cartridge
- An unusual change after flooding, tank cleaning, or plumbing work
How to order the correct replacement
- Turn off the water and power following the system instructions before opening a housing.
- Photograph the complete housing and the old cartridge before disposal.
- Record length, diameter, end style, and any code printed on the part.
- Send the photos, system model, district, and required quantity.
- Wait for written compatibility, price, delivery, and installation confirmation.

Installation and disposal
Use clean hands and tools, check the housing seal, avoid cross-threading, and test for leaks after reopening the water. A damaged O-ring or dirty sealing surface can cause leaks even when the cartridge is correct. Follow local disposal guidance for used cartridges and avoid presenting a used part as new.
