The external pre-filter receives source water before the main unit. It is intended to capture larger visible particles so the finer sediment, carbon, and RO stages are not carrying the full sediment load.

The correct interval depends on source-water sediment, household use, pressure, flow, and the cartridge condition.

- Visible darkening or heavy sediment buildup on the cartridge

What this stage does not do by itself
A 5 micron sediment cartridge is a first barrier for suspended material. It is not a complete drinking-water treatment system and should not be described as removing dissolved contaminants or every microorganism by itself.
