What is an RO pre-filter?
A pre-filter is the first stage of an RO water purifier. It catches sand, mud, rust and other larger particles so that the carbon filter and the RO membrane that follow can do their job and last longer.
The AquaLife RO purifier uses a 5 micron sediment pre-filter, a 1 micron sediment filter and an inline carbon filter before the RO membrane.
Pre filter for well water and muddy water
Many homes in Sri Lanka use well water, which can carry mud (“mada”) after heavy rain. The 5 micron sediment filter, often called a mud filter, is the stage that traps these larger particles first.
How much it removes depends on your water. Tell us your water source and we will advise which cartridge you need.
When should you replace a pre-filter?
- Water flow becomes noticeably slower
- The cartridge looks dark or clogged when opened
- Muddy or well water usually needs more frequent changes than tap water
- Follow the interval our technician recommends for your water

What is a mud (mada) filter?
It is the common name for the sediment pre-filter. It traps mud, sand and rust at the first stage of the purifier.
Is the 5 micron filter the same as a sediment filter?
Yes. "5 micron" describes how fine the sediment filter is. The AquaLife system also has a finer 1 micron sediment stage.
How often should I replace the pre-filter?
It depends on your water. Muddy or well water clogs the pre-filter faster. Our technician can recommend an interval for your home.
